Robert Coover was born in Charles City, Iowa, in 1932 and graduated from Herrin Township High School in 1949. He worked at The Southern Illinoisan briefly as a reporter and spent two years attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at Indiana University in 1953.
